Topic: Active Shooter

An active shooter is an individual(s) actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and other populated area. In most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Captain Tom Seifert of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office will discuss motivational factors behind active shooter attacks, lessons learned, and best practices and techniques in preparing and reacting in an active shooter situation.

CaptainTomSeifertCaptain Tom Seifert has been working in law enforcement for over 15 years. Captain Seifert started his law enforcement career when he hired by the Huntersville Police Department in 2001. During his time at the Huntersville Police Department he worked in several assignments to include, Patrol Officer, Training Officer, School Resource Officer, Patrol Sergeant, Community Services Sergeant, and Patrol Lieutenant before leaving in 2015 to join the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. Captain Seifert received his Advanced Law Enforcement Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission in February 2006. Captain Seifert completed his undergraduate studies at the State University of New York at Cortland, and received his Master’s Degree at Adelphi University in New York.
